Byron Bay Spa Guide 2021

Who doesn’t love an amazing spa treatment? But how do we know which spa to book and what type of treatment will work for us? I’ve spent the last two decades traveling the globe designing spas and reviewing treatments so know a thing or two about what makes an outstanding spa. Thankfully, the Byron Shire is home to some of the best healers and practitioners in the world (seriously). Here are my recommendations of the best spas in the region…

Comma Spaces
When it comes to spas, it’s all about consistency and the massage sequences at Comma Spaces are not only consistent but results-oriented. Unlike some spas that are therapist-dependent so can be a hit and miss, feel reassured that your massage at Comma will be as good as the previous one you tried. I’ve tried both Comma Spaces (their Melbourne venue has a fabulous Bath House). Comma Spaces is a must-book for those who expect an exceptional massage for their money! P.S. I’m still working my way through their menu but my fav so far is ‘The Long Exhale’ – so good!

Eléme Day Spa
I’ve only been to this spa once and was fortunate to have been recommended a treatment that was truly one of the best sequences I’ve tried in a while. Drum roll…it’s the ‘Curative Crystalus’ by Sodashi, an upscale Australian spa brand. The 90-minute sequence consists of a deep and slow meditative massage enhanced with warm crystals and felt so grounding for my mind and body. Located within the tropical Crystalbrook Byron resort, Eléme Day Spa is one of the few day spas in the region that houses both a steam and infrared sauna!  The spa is open to outside guests.

I love Kiva Spa for its affordable Bathhouse Experience – the wood-fired sauna, hammam steam room and several warm magnesium pools plus a cold plunge pool set amongst a Balinese garden. If you are looking for a luxury experience, Kiva Spa may not be for you, however they do offer a comprehensive menu of spa treatments delivered by expert practitioners. When booking a treatment, make sure you ask for the most popular or experienced therapist. Kiva Spa is open seven days 10am-9pm!

Gaia Spa & Retreat
Nothing beats having a sublime spa treatment in a setting like Gaia Retreat & Spa. Apparently, I was one of the first writers to do a story on the opening of this beautiful wellness retreat that opened over a decade ago – and the positive news is that every time I return, it’s better than before. Recently, I tried one of their signature facials that was a unique and memorable sequence with a profoundly healing touch (plus long-term therapist Nichola is a master in her craft). After your treatment, relax around the salt-water pool, take a sauna or meander around the beautiful gardens.
